There are a lot of stereotypes going around regarding Texas as a state. Mentioning it to people that don’t live there just makes them think of cowboys, dusty prairies, farms and a thick accent. We’re not saying these things don’t exist in Texas. It is the birthplace of most Wild West legends, it does have quite a few dusty prairies, and the accent some of its citizens use can be quite thick at times. But that’s just not all and there is still a surprising amount of things to do there. Weekend getaways in Texas actually have a lot to offer. So, what you can do and where you could go?
Geographical diversity
The most important part of why weekend getaways in Texas have surprisingly much to offer is the actual location of the state. Also known as the Lone Star State, it has quite a diverse topology, ranging from hills, prairie and grass plains to beaches and jagged shorelines. As the local saying goes – everything feels big in Texas. And it’s basically true, since it is quite a big state, both by its territory and its geographical features. Basically, weekend getaways here are quite easy to plan, as long as you inform yourself on what is available in one of its 7 regions. From the Panhandle Plains to the Gulf Coast, finding what you’d be interested in is quite easy.
Places to visit and things to do in Texas
So let’s take a look at what exactly Texas weekend getaways can offer you. Interested in Wild West legends and that general cowboy atmosphere? No problem, you’ll find a lot of country fairs and rodeo shows at almost any time of year. Looking for natural beauty? No issues there either as this state has more than enough campgrounds, lakes and rivers you can visit. There’s also shoreline longer than 600 miles we’ve mentioned before, remember? Beaches, marinas, scuba diving, sailing and surfing – the Texas shoreline can offer you all of that. But what if you’re more interested in urban scenery for your weekend getaways? Well, you might be surprised there too, because there are more than a few big cities with attractions of their own available in Texas.
Urban attractions for weekend getaways
Even if you’re not interested in nature, there’s a lot cities have to offer. For instance, there are quite a few unique restaurants you can visit on your weekend getaways. The Big Texan restaurant located in Amarillo has both a good reputation and tradition behind it. There’s nothing quite comparable to a Texas steak, and The Big Texan certainly has the best examples in its menu. The Six Flags theme park in Arlington is also quite an attraction. But if you’re really looking for something spectacular, you should visit Reunion Tower in Dallas. It’s basically a restaurant located at the top of a 550 foot high tower, and it spins around, giving you a magnificent view of the city.
